Location
Situated at the backdrop of the mighty Himalayas, the Ashram is just three 3 kilometers from Rishikesh. Also called Sivanandanagar, it falls under the Tehri-Garhwal district of the state of Uttaranchal. Jolly grant is the nearest airport to this city at Dehradun, that is 40 kms away. Rishikesh is well connected by the railways from all parts of the country.

About the Ashram
The Sivananda ashram was founded the Swami Sivananda in the year 1932. Incidently, the ashram is located quite close to the Swarg Ashram. Initially, it was an abandoned cowshed, that Shri Sivananda ji used to call Ananda Kutir or the Abode of Bliss. And soon with the gathering of disciples other nearby cowsheds were also added to Ananda Kutir.

About Divine Life Society
The Divine Life Society was established, four years later, at the Sivananda Ashram and gradually in 1938 a journal by the name of The Divine Life was started. "Serve, Love, Give, Purify, Meditate, Realise" is the motto of the society that makes it different and unique from others. The Sri Viswanath Mandir was consecrated in 1943 and through this phase of expansion Swami Sivananda attended to his patients, comprising of passing monks, pilgrims and local inhabitants of the area. Later he established the Sivananda Ayurvedic Pharmacy in 1945. The pharmacy uses rare Himalayan herbs in its medical preparations.

Swami Sivananda, one of the most prominent and known yoga teachers of the world, founded the Yoga-Vedanta Forest Academy in 1948 to teach his followers or disciples, whose number has significantly increased, in the pursuit of yoga. The Academy set up its own Press in 1951.

It was established in 1957,six years prior to the passing away of this visionary doctor.
