Pushkar Camel Fair
In
the royal state of Rajasthan in India lies little Pushkar, just 14 km from
Ajmer. Set in a valley and surrounded by amazing hill on three sides and
sand dune on one side, Pushkar forms a fascinating platform for the
enthralling Pushkar Camel Fair. People and devotees from far and wide visit
this place in large number during the Camel Fair, which is the biggest Camel
fair in the world and one of the biggest events in Rajasthan India. The Events
The annual Camel fair of Pushkar is one of the most visited cultural events in the world. Showcasing several cultural events, which include - trading of cattle, camel safari, folk musics & folk dances, etc., the Pushkar Camel Fair entertains one and all.
As the month of November arrives, Pushkar is all set for the Pushkar Camel fair, the biggest event of Rajasthan. Tourists and devotees start gathering in large numbers for this gala event, which falls on the Kartik Purnima day or the full moon day of Oct-Nov. The Kartik Purnima day is believed to be a very auspicious day in the Hindu Calendar year. On this day, devotees from several parts of the country come and take a holy dip in the holy waters of the Pushkar lake, known to be one of the most sacred lakes in India.
Villagers and farmers come from many parts of the country to buy and sell their cattle here. It is also an occasion for Hindu pilgrims to pay obeisance at the Brahma temple, which is the only temple dedicated to Lord Brahma in the world.
The Legend
The legend says that, in battle lord Brahma killed the demon Vajra Nabh with a lotus flower, whose petals floated down to earth and landed in three places in and around Pushkar where lakes sprang up. It is believed that, Pushkar Lake was surrounded by 500 temples and 52 palaces at one point. The Brahma temple is the most important temple here, and is in fact the only temple dedicated to Lord Brahma in India.
